White feminists defending The Onion sound an awful lot like male comedians who scoff at criticism of rape jokes.

The implication: these individual white feminists know what anti-black misogyny looks like better than black women do—even that black women should thank the authors of this piece, almost certainly one or more white dudes, for doing the work of our liberation. This is not so different from white male comedians who think they get to decide what is and isn’t sexist or harmful to survivors.

In a just feminism, black women wouldn’t have to deal with attacks from feminists whitesplaining how we fail to understand humor on top of challenging racist, misogynist comedy.

These 3 quotes are from her essay The Other Double Standard: On Humor and Racism in Feminism.

(I wrote about the same topic myself last week: The Predictable Cycle of White Liberal “Humor” At Black Women’s Expense)

Interesting how when one is in a position of POWER and not the butt of the “joke” or the “satire” all empathy and concern is lost. White feminists defend The Onion’s attacks on Black women in the way that White men defend their “right” to make rape jokes attacking “all” women, and since “all” usually means “White and no one else;” those are the times that White feminists stand fiercely against it. Not surprising.

  • What Kelly Rowland sang: I was in an abusive relationship. He was both emotionally and physically abusive. He was mentally manipulative, turning me against my best friend/sister and telling me she was the last person in the world who loved me. I was feeling low at a time when she was doing really well and that led to some feelings of jealousy and devalued self-worth, especially when I felt like there was nobody I could talk to about it. But when I did let her know what was happening, she was right there by my side.
  • What the blogs report: KELLY ADMITS SHE WAS JEALOUS OF BEYONCE IN ANGRY, CURSE-LADEN RANT SHE DIDN'T EVEN WRITE; SHE'S A HATER.

"In one 1962 survey roughly 90 percent of White people believed Black children had an equally fair opportunity to get a quality education as White children. Wise recognizes that White Americans’ lack of awareness—and denial about the extent of racial inequality in America—is dated, calling it “borderline delusional”."

(Unpacking the Snowflake - Kevin M. Hemer)

In 1962—  before Civil Rights legislation, when Black people were literally having their houses bombed for moving into white neighborhoods, and Black neighborhoods were being bombed in entirety for having nice houses, white people were literally releasing dogs on Black children (my parents) for walking to school, Black children and teenagers were literally leaving school to protest and then being arrested for demanding to be treated equally, police commissioners were driving through Black neighborhoods in tanks to instill fear in them for wanting to be treated equally, everything was separate with Black people getting the shittier end, they literally had lower education standards for Black schools and Black people were still getting lynched and the KKK was strong—

White people when surveyed said “there is equal opportunity“… So don’t think it’s weird that 93% or so of white people still think “there is equal opportunity” today. They’ve literally always been wrong and still are.

This post isn’t about welfare, but it beautifully illustrates a point I’ve been making (or trying to make) since I started this blog:

Privileged people do not understand the realities of people who lack their privilege.

White people assume PoC have the same education and job opportunities.

People with permanent addresses assume homeless people can just fill out an application for McDonalds or Burger King, be hired, and immediately use their paychecks to secure housing.

People who don’t receive welfare assume people on welfare are lazy and intentionally having multiple children and not looking for jobs.

This is why I am always, always asking people if they’ve ever considered that maybe, JUST MAYBE, they don’t have the whole story about their cousin/neighbor/friend’s sister. Because people in privilege tend to ascribe their own circumstances to everyone, even when that’s the exact opposite of reality.

Call Me By My Name

If you watch the VH1 reality show Gossip Game you know all about Vivian and her transgender son.

If you don’t, the quick and dirty of it is, a gossip blogger featured on this show, Vivian Billings, is shown to have some beef with a former Power 105 DJ turned iTunes podcast host, Steph Lova.  It all comes to a boil when, while recording her podcast with Vivian’s cousin Star (also a former Hot 97 DJ — you’ll remember him as the asshat who made fun of Aaliyah’s death back in ‘01) she “outs” Vivian’s daughter as gay.

Turns out Vivian’s daughter Khadijah is actually not gay, but transgender and wishes to be referred to with male pronouns and called Kayden.

All of this is clearly difficult for Vivian to completely understand as she continues to call her son her daughter and tells people that she is gay (when Kayden is clear that he is straight).  She also references Kayden’s “choosing” to do this (“this” being transitioning from female to male)  At one point, Vivian breaks down while talking to Kim Osorio about her difficulties with understanding her son’s transition.  Kim even calls Vivian out for continuing to refer to her son as her daughter.

I don’t really spend a lot of time considering the outsider’s perspective of a transgender family member.  I, to my knowledge, have none and so it’s hard for me to make it personal.  But this morning, I got to thinking about my childhood nickname.

  • Scene - My mother is making me crazy (so a normal day) but extra because it's Mother's Day and she thinks this gives her license to go above and beyond (and maybe it does).
  • Me: If you don't stop, I'm gonna drown you in that tub.
  • Mom: And then what are you going to do next year for Mother's Day?
  • Me: I don't know, Mother. It's not next year yet.
  • Mom: See, that's your problem. You don't ever think ahead.
